Aamir khan's Profile
Aamir Khan, the child artiste of yesteryears (Yaadon Ki Baaraat, 1973) and the chocolate boy of the 80s (he made his debut as a lead actor in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988), is today a showbiz powerhouse. Known for his perfectionism, he is today one of the top-rung actors who can rewrite the rules of filmmaking and set new standards.
A method actor, his range of characterisations remain unparalleled It is this diversity and his ability to portray different characters on screen that is he is today regarded as one of the biggest superstars but also one of the finest Bollywood actors.
Born in a conservative Muslim family in Mumbai, he first appeared as a child artiste in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). Many years later, he found himself acting in the art film Holi (1984) along with his friend Ashutosh Gowariker who is now known as a director to reckon with.
In a marked departure, Aamir went on to become the state tennis champion of Maharashtra. And just before his debut film QSQT got released, he fell head over heels in love with his neighbour Reena. Since she belonged to a Hindu family, they faced much opposition. This didn’t deter Aamir who married her anyway, but secretly and made it known after the QSQT was released and declared a super hit. The marital happiness lasted thirteen years as he divorced Reena in December 2001 and married Bangalore girl Kiran Rao in December 2005. She has assisted him on the sets of Lagaan and Cupid brought the two together. He has two children from his first wife and none from his second.
On the acting front, Aamir showed his rebel streak way back in the 80s. In his very second film Raakh in 1989, he did a complete role reversal by playing an angry young man out to avenge the insult and abuse suffered by his female friend. His breakthrough performance even got him the National Film Award by the Special Jury.
His later films flopped consistently at the box office until the arrival of Dil in 1990. It was the biggest blockbuster of the year and brought him back from relative anonymity. And then, followed superlative performances and hit films like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Baazi (1995), Rangeela (1995), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Raja Hindustani (1996), Ishq (1997), Earth (1998), Ghulam (1998), Sarfarosh (1999), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Lagaan (2001), Mangal Panday (2005), Fanaa (2006) and Rang De Basanti (2006).
Ofcourse, there were a few flops along the way, like Parampara (1993), Baazi (1995) and Earth (1998). But the hits far outweighed the flops and he has never had to look back ever since. In 2007, he turned director with Taare Zameen Par which brought him critical acclaim and box office moolah. The best part of his career is that many of his films are considered cult classics like QSQT, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.
